What to Expect When You Come to a Functional Integration® lesson

Functional Integration (FI) lessons are tailored to you as an individual and are based on the particular question, difficulty, or curiosity that you bring to the session. The lesson strategy may use gentle hands-on or verbal guidance, or a combination of the two. Lessons last for about 55 minutes to an hour. They are offered in person or via Zoom.

During the lesson, you may lie, sit, or kneel on a low, padded table, sit in a chair, or stand on the floor (or other surface). Wear comfortable, non-binding clothing, and wear something that preserves your modesty -- very short shorts or skirts and tank tops are less suitable than a t-shirt and workout pants. It is generally more comfortable for you to have neither a very full nor a very empty stomach for the lesson. If you have GERD (acid reflux) or are pregnant, let the practitioner know before the lesson so that the table can be adjusted for your comfort.

The lesson typically unfolds as a neurological conversation between the practitioner's nervous system and yours. Whether the movement suggestions come through the practitioner's hands or your auditory system, your practitioner's intention is that your lesson be comfortable at all times. If an attempted movement causes pain or serious discomfort, please alert your practitioner immediately. Sometimes what your nervous system learns in a lesson can be very explicit and easy to define. At other times you may feel that something has changed through the lesson, but pinning it down into words is elusive for you. A day or two later, though, you may find yourself doing something very differently, for example getting out of the car or climbing the stairs.
